The Waterville Fire Department has an authorized strength of one Chief,  Administrative Assistant, 15 Career Firefighters, a Department Chaplain, and 40 Call Firefighters. Applicants for full time positions must meet basic physical and educational requirements, pass an agility test and participate in an assessment center review. Call firefighter applicants must pass a physicians physical, attend a Rookie school and pass a review board interview.

Firefighters receive daily training through in-house training and often attend outside training. A majority of personnel attend fire seminars and schools, and several firefighters have earned an associates degree in fire science.

There is a wide range of training from emergency medical training, high angle rescue, below grade rescue, hazardous materials, fire investigation, fire prevention, pump operations, driver training, water and ice rescue, ladders and many, many more.
